What is 1/4" minus?
1/4" minus is crushed basalt rock ranging from 1/4" pieces all the way down to fine dust. With more fines than the larger gravels, it packs down into a tight, smooth surface.
It's a favorite for paver and patio bases, walkways and paths, and leveling under sheds, hot tubs and above-ground pools. It's also easy to rake and screed flat, which makes it great for fine grading work.

Yes. It's easy to level and compacts into a firm, smooth base for pavers, patios and stepping stones. For heavier use or soft ground, a layer of 3/4" minus underneath adds extra strength.
It's better suited for walkways, pads and paver bases. The small rock can wash out or rut under vehicle traffic, so for driveways we recommend 3/4" minus.
Basalt is a hard, dense volcanic rock that's quarried and crushed into sharp, angular pieces. Compared to crushed round rock, which is river rock that's been crushed and still has some smooth faces, basalt has fractured faces on every side. That helps it lock together tighter and compact into a firmer, more stable surface.
