Crushed drain rock
What is crushed drain rock?
This is crushed rock screened to between 3/4" and 1-1/2" with the fines removed. Most of it runs closer to the 1-1/2" size, but you'll find some smaller pieces mixed in. The angular pieces leave plenty of open space for water while locking together better than round rock.
It's a go-to for French drains, foundation and footing drains, dry wells and wet spots that need to dry out. In certain situations, it can also be used as a base rock where you need a clean, free-draining base.

Drain rock questions
Clean means the fines and dust have been screened out. Without fines filling the gaps, water can flow freely through the rock instead of getting trapped.
Both drain well. Crushed drain rock has angular edges that lock together, so it stays put better under foot traffic and on slopes. Round drain rock is smooth river rock that's easier to rake and has a more natural look.
In most drains it's a good idea. Drain fabric keeps the surrounding soil from washing into the rock, which helps the drain keep working longer.
Drain rock has the fines removed, so water flows through it. 3/4" minus keeps the fines, which lets it compact into a firm surface for driveways, but it won't drain as freely.
