3" minus base rock
What is 3" minus?
3" minus is crushed basalt rock ranging from 3" pieces all the way down to fine dust. It's our largest crushed base rock, and the big pieces spread the weight and bridge soft spots that smaller rock would sink into.
It's the go-to first layer for soft or muddy ground, new roads and areas that see heavy trucks and equipment. Because the rock is so large, you'll want equipment like a tractor or skid steer to move and spread it, and depending on the quarry, some pieces can be larger than 3". It's usually topped with 1-1/2" or 3/4" minus for a smoother surface to drive and walk on.

3" minus questions
It's crushed rock that's 3" and smaller, all the way down to fine dust. The "minus" means everything smaller than 3" is included, and the fines fill the gaps between the larger rock so it packs down solid.
Use 3" minus when the ground is very soft or muddy, or when heavy trucks and equipment will be using the area. The bigger rock spreads the weight and bridges soft spots better. For firmer ground, 1-1/2" minus is usually enough.
You can, and it holds up to heavy traffic, but the large rock makes for a rough surface. Most people top it with 1-1/2" or 3/4" minus for a smoother finish.
Basalt is a hard, dense volcanic rock that's quarried and crushed into sharp, angular pieces. Compared to crushed round rock, which is river rock that's been crushed and still has some smooth faces, basalt has fractured faces on every side. That helps it lock together tighter and compact into a firmer, more stable surface.
