1-1/2" minus base rock
What is 1-1/2" minus?
1-1/2" minus is crushed basalt rock ranging from 1-1/2" pieces all the way down to fine dust. The larger rock gives it more strength and load-bearing capacity than 3/4" minus, while the fines help it pack down tight.
It's a great in-between option when you need something stronger than 3/4" minus but smaller than 3" minus, and it's still small enough to walk on. It works well as a base layer under driveways and parking areas, and holds up on its own for commercial drives, heavy equipment areas and spots that see a lot of traffic.

1-1/2" minus questions
It's crushed rock that's 1-1/2" and smaller, all the way down to fine dust. The "minus" means everything smaller than 1-1/2" is included, and those fines help it pack down into a solid base.
1-1/2" minus has larger rock, so it's stronger and better at bridging soft ground and handling heavy loads. 3/4" minus is smaller and compacts into a smoother finish, which is why it's usually the top layer over a 1-1/2" base.
Yes. It makes a strong, durable surface, especially for heavy traffic and equipment. It's a little rougher underfoot and under tires than 3/4" minus, so many people top it with a layer of 3/4" minus for a smoother drive.
Basalt is a hard, dense volcanic rock that's quarried and crushed into sharp, angular pieces. Compared to crushed round rock, which is river rock that's been crushed and still has some smooth faces, basalt has fractured faces on every side. That helps it lock together tighter and compact into a firmer, more stable surface.
