2"–8" riprap

2 to 8 inch rip rap rock lining a drainage swale in Warren, Oregon

What is riprap?

Rock That Holds the Ground.

Riprap is large, angular rock ranging from about 2" to 8". The sharp edges lock the pieces together, so it stays in place and shields the soil underneath from moving water.

It's used to armor ditches, culvert ends, creek banks and steep slopes, anywhere water is trying to wash the ground away. It also compacts into an extreme-duty road base, which makes it a great choice for really soft, muddy areas with poor soil conditions.

Riprap questions

Good Questions. Straight Answers.

What size is 2"–8" riprap?

Most pieces range from about 2" up to 8" across, with a mix of sizes in between. Depending on the quarry, you may see some pieces that are a little larger.

What is riprap used for?

Riprap is used for erosion control along ditches, slopes, culverts and creek banks. It also compacts into an extreme-duty road base for really soft, muddy areas with poor soil conditions.

Do I need fabric under riprap?

It's a good idea in most cases. Landscape or filter fabric underneath keeps the soil from washing out between the rocks, which helps the riprap stay in place longer.

What's the difference between riprap and cobble?

Riprap is angular, so the pieces lock together and stay put on slopes and in moving water. Cobble is naturally rounded river rock, which looks great in landscaping but can roll and shift more easily.
